Modernizing Infrastructure Stacks Unlocks Scalability, Cuts Costs, and Prevents Technology Debt Buildup

January 21, 2025 · 2 min read

The Problem

A leading technology company faced a critical infrastructure crossroads. Their current platform was built on legacy components that were becoming increasingly difficult to scale, expensive to operate, and risky to maintain. As the business grew, three major infrastructure challenges demanded immediate attention: log management scalability, API gateway costs and flexibility, and application hosting optimization.

Why It Hurts

When infrastructure challenges go unaddressed, they create cascading problems that undermine business growth. The company's existing Splunk infrastructure couldn't efficiently handle the growing volume of logs, creating performance bottlenecks and operational blind spots. Their Apigee API management platform consumed substantial budget while offering limited flexibility for the company's evolving requirements. Meanwhile, applications running on Heroku lacked the customization and cost optimization opportunities available on modern cloud platforms. The longer these inefficiencies persisted, the more technical debt accumulated, making future upgrades increasingly expensive and complex. The risk of outages, security vulnerabilities, and uncontrolled cost growth threatened the company's competitive position.

The Solution

DevObsessed implemented a comprehensive infrastructure modernization program with three coordinated initiatives, each designed to enhance performance while reducing operational burden.

For log management, the team architected and deployed Splunk clusters on Google Cloud Platform, creating a scalable log analysis system capable of handling exponential data growth. The GCP-based approach provides superior performance, elasticity, and cost efficiency compared to on-premises or traditional cloud deployments.

For API management, the company transitioned from Apigee to Kong, a modern, open-source API gateway that reduces licensing costs while offering greater customization and control. Kong's architecture allows the development team to implement sophisticated API policies, rate limiting, and authentication mechanisms tailored to their specific business needs.

For application hosting, 17 Ruby on Rails applications were systematically migrated from Heroku to Google Cloud Platform. This transition eliminated the hosting middleman, providing direct control over infrastructure, custom scaling policies, and significantly lower operational costs. The migration was executed with a focus on maintaining continuous service availability, ensuring zero disruption to customer-facing applications.

The result is a modern, efficient infrastructure stack that scales with the business, reduces operational costs, and provides the customization and control necessary for long-term success. The company now has a cloud-native platform capable of supporting rapid innovation and growth.
